10 ways to use a spinner wheel in maths

A random wheel is most useful in maths not for picking students, but for generating the numbers. Here are ten activities that need nothing but a wheel and a board.

Number generation

The simplest use, and the one that saves the most preparation. Instead of writing a worksheet of practice questions, generate them live.

  1. Times tables drill — load 1–12 and spin twice. Two spins give the pair, and because nobody knows what is coming, students cannot count ahead to work out their question.
  2. Place value — spin 0–9 four times to build a number, then ask for the value of a chosen digit. Students who have "got it" are unbothered by an unfamiliar number; those who have not are exposed immediately.
  3. Mental starters — spin 1–100 twice and pick an operation. Five minutes, no preparation, different every day.
  4. Rounding practice — spin a three-digit number and ask for it rounded to the nearest ten and hundred. The awkward cases (95, 995) turn up on their own often enough to be worth discussing when they do.

Probability, taught with a real random device

Probability is the one topic where the wheel is not a convenience but the subject itself. Students who have only met probability as fractions on paper often do not connect it to anything that happens.

  1. Experimental vs theoretical — load six entries, predict how many times each will come up in sixty spins, then run them and compare. The gap between prediction and result is the lesson, and it is more persuasive than any explanation.
  2. Weighted probability — give entries different weights so the slices are visibly unequal, then ask students to estimate the odds from the picture before revealing the numbers. Reading probability off an area is a genuinely useful skill.
  3. The law of large numbers — spin ten times and record the spread, then a hundred. Watching the proportions settle is the clearest demonstration of the idea that most students will get.

Problem-solving and discussion

  1. Random problem selection — load your problem set by number and spin for which one the class tackles. Removes the sense that you chose an easy one to make a point.
  2. Constraint generation — spin for a shape, a number of sides, and an area, then ask students to construct something meeting all three. Some combinations are impossible, and finding out why is the best part.
  3. Vocabulary recall — load key terms from the unit and spin for one a student has to define and use in a sentence.

Setting up once

Most of these are worth saving rather than rebuilding. A wheel saved as "1–12 tables" or "Unit 4 vocabulary" loads in a click at the start of a lesson, which is the difference between a routine you keep and one you abandon in week three.
